The ISM code requires a Designated Person Ashore (DPA) to implement a company’s Safety Management System (SMS). An SMS is a structured and documented system which manages risk and safety onboard a vessel. Following Policies, Processes, and Procedures as laid out within the company’s SMS help ensure the safety of the vessel and the people on board. The International Safety Management Code (ISM Code) requires all commercial vessels over 500gt to have an approved SMS by their Flag State to operate.
The DPA provides a link between those serving on board a vessel and the highest level of management within the company. They are responsible for monitoring safety and pollution prevention aspects of the operation of each yacht and ensure that adequate resources and shore base support are available. The DPA is fundamental in providing an effective and efficient SMS onboard a vessel.
Divergent Yachting believe that the DPA is essential for successful yacht management. At Divergent Yachting our DPA who sailed at sea for 10+ years has the experience and knowledge to assist in technical, operational and personnel matters. Currently holding an in-date MCA Unlimited license, and 22+ years shipping experience, our DPA has a close relationship with Flag Technical departments, industry administrators and fellow industry professionals. Our DPA visits managed vessels regularly to observe individual yacht operations onboard, in addition to our Yacht Manager visits, to assess the crew moral, carry out assessments and build a close relationship with all ranks of crew. Crew can contact the DPA and raise any concerns or complaints as they feel fit at any time. Our DPA is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for all crew.
Crew Wellness is as important to us at Divergent Yachting as is running the yacht safely.
